Dear Dr Hayley,
I have read with great interest the letter of Dr Deborah Cook (Int. Rev. Psychoanal., Vol. 14, Part 3, 1987) concerning the paper 'Psychoanalyse und Telepathie', by Freud.
I am sorry to state that both Walter Benjamin (quoted by Dr Cook) and Dr Cook have been off the right track. In fact, the article by Freud that appeared in the 1934 volume of the Almanach der Psychoanalyse was not 'Psychoanalyse und Telepathie'. It was simply the reprint of a chapter of the Neue Folge der Vorlesungen zur Einführung in die Psychoanalyse by Freud (1933), as clearly stated by the Editor of the Almanach in a preliminary note.
The chapter in Freud's Neue Folge is entitled 'Traum und Okkultismus'. The title in the Almanach is 'Zum Problem der Telepathie': but the content is absolutely the same.
As I have in my shelves all the volumes of the Almanach der Psychoanalyse, it was easy for me to check data, titles, etc.
Yours sincerely,
