The author traces some of Freud's personal and cultural tracks to increase understanding of the way Freud came to describe some aspects of 'The interpretation of dreams'. He focuses on the processes of displacement and condensation which Freud defined as the two agents of the dream work.
The author went back to some of Freud's earliest papers and his personal experiences, focusing on the various sources Freud quotes. In his correspondence with Fliess, however, Freud all but denied the significance of those sources to his work.
