This paper is concerned with the study of the correspondence between Anna Freud and Ernest Jones related to the problems of the emigration of analysts from Berlin and Vienna during the nazi persecution. The author has also taken into consideration other documents. Besides the human problems, the correspondence enables the reader to get at third hand a picture of the difficulties Jones, his colleagues and Anna Freud had to face. Of particular interest and importance is the possibility to understand the role played by the International Psychoanalytical Association, of which Jones was the President at the time, in rescuing the analysts, and the tactics adopted by Jones especially with regard to Germany – already in the hands of the nazis. In this connexion, two cases are taken into consideration: the expulsion of Reich and the difficulty related to the forced acculturalization of middle-European analysts to their new countries, particularly the United Kingdom and the United States.
