This paper reflects upon unconscious conflicts that pave the way for nuclear warfare and the destruction of human life on a worldwide scale. Attention is drawn in particular to the problem of establishing an effective, publicly encouraged organization which could contain and balance these conflicts without collapsing under their enormously destructive pressures. Some evidence is provided which suggests that the current organization (the United Nations) is not yet strong enough to fulfil this critical function.
