This paper introduces amae, a Japanese concept, because of its special bearing on psychoanalysis. Amae primarily describes the behaviour and its accompanying affect of a child seeking his mother or any caring person, but it may refer to the similar situations that occur between adults. Amae in its most primitive form is equal to the concept of primary love defined by Michael Balint. It also can be related to the concept of attachment elaborated by John Bowlby and other concepts like narcissism, identification, ambivalence, etc. Freud's case of Dora is cited to illustrate the clinical application of amae with a special attention to his notion of homosexual love. The repudiation of femininity, another Freudian notion, is also considered in this regard. It is the author's opinion that the concept of amae complements the existing theories of psychoanalysis by unifying many concepts usually not related to one another.
