Feminists have often criticized the patriarchalism of Freudian psychoanalysis. By contrast, this paper argues, Klein's work is much more mother-centred. Its development out of her mothering experience, particularly out of her analysands' transference experience of her qua mother, is detailed. The difficulties this got her into with her more orthodox Freudian colleagues are at the same time outlined, the paper ending with an indication of the way Klein's work on mothering informs current feminist theory and practice.
