In this paper the authors examine the ending of analysis in relation to the establishment of an 'analytical object' and that of a 'psychoanalytic function' in the mind of the patient. The analytical object will become apparent through self-analysis. Intuition, which according to Bion is linked to acquiring direct knowledge, is described here as occupying a special place in the psychoanalytic function of the personality, The latter is also examined in detail.
Self-analysis is discussed, starting from the ideas put forward by Dr Delia S. de Fondevila, using Winnicott's creation of a transitional object as a model for its development. This is followed by some considerations on the mourning resulting from the loss of the real analyst.
