To commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the death of Sigmund Freud and also the centenary of the birth of Edoardo Weiss, the author reconstructs the story of their relationship. Typical characteristics of both men emerge from the study of their relationship, including Freud's great scientific courage, his severity in defending the cause of 'die Sach', his intolerance towards perversions and psychopaths, all of which were confirmed later. The author also deals with some of Freud's political ideas and his intelligent discretion 'as analytical consultant' to Weiss.
The paper starts with an introduction to Weiss' work as the pioneer of psychoanalysis in Italy.
