This paper suggests that the theoretical and technical models presented by Freud in Studies on Hysteria are based on two sources: (1) the pre-existing model of the speech apparatus, and (2) clinical observations during treatment. Freud's theoretical model of pathogenesis of hysteria and the complementary model of therapeutic technique add the concept of affect to the model of the speech apparatus. Freud does not succeed in creating an integrated model. Affect remains to this day, conceptually, one of the most problematic areas of analytic theorizing.
