My presentation of Freud's report on Little Hans emphasizes the following supplementary points: Hans was a seduced and over-stimulated child, excited by his mother but also terrified of his death wishes towards her. He turned towards his father, who had also been seductive with him, looking for both support and erotic gratification. With Freud's help, the balance of power in the family was altered, so that Hans and his father were in better alliance even though Hans' struggle to hold on to his creativity was still not supported. The negative oedipal having not yet been formulated, Freud was reluctant to take note of rage at the mother and its complex consequences. Hans was left with unresolved tendencies toward over-compliance and with masochistic needs to be overpowered and defeated by superior males. Biographical and autobiographical data suggest that these residual problems haunted his adult creative life.
