Reading this highly expanded and enriched second edition has been a remarkable experience. When one is faced with a 700 page volume there is an expectation of having to “plow through” the pages. Instead, this new volume is one of the most readable, personal, jargon-free and inspiring books that I have read in the field of psychiatry. The writing is lucid—even poetic—and has a subtle dramatic momentum that beckons the reader to go forward and share with the author his views of the history, etiology, psychodynamics and treatment of that group of persons who come to be considered “schizophrenic.”
The volume is divided into nine parts:
The Manifest Symptomatology and Other Basic Notions
The Psychodynamics of Schizophrenia
This section includes child and adolescent development in the family in relation to the onset of the psychosis.
The World of Schizophrenia: A Psychostructural Approach
Here, Arieti brings forth in detail the development of faulty cognition and integrates
his well-known contributions in this area with
psychodynamic factors in relation to their outcome, i.e. schizophrenic psychic structures as well as the creative activities of the schizophrenic.
A Longitudinal View of Schizophrenia
