On April 16, 1975, Dr. Silvano Arieti, editor of this Journal, received the National Book Award in the field of science for his book, Interpretations of Schizophrenia (Second Edition). This is the first time a psychiatric book has received this award.
The book received the following citation from the judges:
“A monumental and definitive study of what is known and conjectured about schizophrenia—remarkable both for its scientific content and profound humanism. No one who reads Dr. Arieti's long book will go away unmoved. The human mind is a strange and mysterious continent and Dr. Arieti has illuminated some of its darkest parts.”
