This paper presents observations upon and case histories of two related types of pathological narcissism characterized by extreme narcissistic vulnerability. Two major neurotic outcomes of such vulnerability will be delineated. The first, in the less mature group, is marked by considerable hypochondriacal rumination. The second, in the more mature type, is a character structure built around invidiousness.† There are also intermediate individuals with personality traits of both groups. Moreover, patients with the less mature type of narcissism progress through the more mature group, i.e., the invidious type, as a transitional stage in the course of successful therapy. A basic motivation in individuals of both groups is the victimization of other persons. There is an effort to induce in targets the individual's own feelings of deprivation, damage and ineffectiveness, along with the consequent mortificacation.
