The publication of this issue of our Journal coincides with the significant and happy occasion of the celebration of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the founding of The American Academy of Psychoanalysis.
The Academy came into being with the strong feeling that psychoanalysis needed protection “from the dangers of premature standardization and a rigidly enforced conformism.”* Its primary purpose was “to serve as a forum for exchanging ideas of common interest for psychoanalysts and representatives of related disciplines” in this country and abroad. The Academy has grown by welcoming diversity and discouraging conformity. The emphasis has not been on the status quo, but on development consonant with our ever-changing world, full of differing sociocultural approaches, complex new biochemicophysical data and fresh and broadening innovations in viewing psychoanalytic theory and practice.
The Journal seeks to present through the written word the principles upon which The Academy was founded and which it continues to stress. We feel that this issue is one of many representative examples of these principles, with contributions both from within and without our organization, country, and specific discipline.
