It is something to be able to paint a particular picture or to carve a statue, and so to make a few objects beautiful, but it is far more glorious to carve and paint the very atmosphere and medium through which we look …. To affect the quality of the day — that is the highest of arts.
I have recently reread many of Silvano Arieti's articles and books, and the simple clarity and penetrating beauty of his writing skill still resonates within me. In reading his words I felt again and again that I was talking with him, and the lack of jargon, the lucid message without technical obscurity stirred my feelings once more, and made me grateful for my friendship with him, and appreciative of the affirmation he has given to all of us to pursue meaning, and to do it with warmth and excitement, with involvement and with love.
The pursuit of meaning was a central theme in Silvano's life, and the prodigious outpouring of scholarship, including over 150 articles and books, might easily obscure our awareness of the other profound achievements of his life. How to assess a man's life? Certainly not through a compilation alone of his works, nor through a listing of his lectures, nor a roll of the patients he has treated. Perhaps if we journey back through his years and catch the human and personal highlights along the way, we can better comprehend and intuit the impact of his remarkable life.
