When Freud began to study patients with hysterical symptoms, he repeatedly encountered stories of sexual seduction (Freud, 1893-1895, 1894). This seemed strange as Freud's patients came from middle-class families. The commitment of adults to the sexual innocence of children, and of the familial interactions, led him to postulate that he had found the traumatic event at the root of adult hysterical symptom formation (Freud 1896, 1905). Later, he had cause to question whether his patients had reported real memories or fantasies (Freud, 1909). Recently Freud has come under attack for changing his mind about the seduction of children (Masson, 1984).
