Suicide exists as a fascination and an enigma. To some degree those attributes
reside in its importance for those who love life. But also, I think, suicide is vexing because its dimensions are unclear. We are not sure in any given suicide whether it is a manifestation of depression, or general disorganization, a philosophical conclusion that life is no longer meaningful, or a game of “Russian roulette” played to demonstrate one's courage.
Suicide is the second greatest cause of death among youth (a group that may be defined as ages 15 to 24). So for physicians, therapists, and analysts it becomes a manner of professional concern as well as personal interest.
