The following two articles represent a new venture for the journal. These consist of contiguous chapters from a “work in progress” by Richard Chessick, whose works have appeared frequently in our pages and who should be familiar to our readers. Although the material presented here is part of a larger corpus, these two chapters can stand on their own as they are dedicated to a specific topic. This contribution is still in a process of formulation and not the finished text. In fact, Dr. Chessick would appreciate readers communicating their reactions to him directly, thereby acting as editorial consultants for the eventual publication. Remaining chapters will appear in other psychoanalytic journals. I hope that the readership will agree that, in addition to the merit of the chapters which follow, this is a novel and exciting way to participate in the creation of a psychoanalytic work.
