This book is published as part of the Teaching Series of the New Library of Psychoanalysis in association with the Institute of Psychoanalysis, London. It aims at serious students of psychoanalysis, especially those wishing a greater acquaintance with the Kleinian school of thought. Hanna Segal is known and admired throughout the world as an effective ambassador of Melanie Klein's thinking, but the author, in this book, wishes to impart Segal's own considerable contributions to psychoanalysis. The author, Michel Quinodoz, is a psychoanalyst in private practice in Geneva, a member of the Suisse Psychoanalytic Society, and Honorary Member of the British Psychoanalytic Society. He is the author of the following books: The Taming of Solitude, Dreams that Turn over a Page, and Reading Freud, enticing titles that already suggest an originality that is apparent in the format he devised for this book. Quinodoz met and was impressed by Segal when attending seminars and supervisions which she conducted in Geneva from 1979 to 1989. She was and is well known for the outspoken ways in which she expressed her beliefs, the clarity and preciseness of her delivery, as well as the perspicacity of her clinical approaches. Quinodoz hopes to convey her spirit best in her own words through taped interviews, preceded by background biographical data, and followed by general overviews of her ideas and writings. To fully convey her impact in the field he adds a section of taped interviews with prominent psychoanalysts of various nationalities, whose critical perspectives enrich the readers' understanding of a conceptual world they are not familiar with. The pages of the book are thus color-coded: bold print for biography, blue paper for
