It does seem obvious to me that Dr. Forrest acts in good faith and really feels obligated to do something in order to enhance the operating budget of the Columbia Psychiatry Department in which he serves as an adjunct professor.
If I understand him correctly, the fact that he is a voluntary professor, in his words, mainly working in private practice, means obviously that he does not get a salary from the hospital, though he has teaching assignments and perhaps a loose research association. And, supposedly, he does not get any research money from grants that are awarded to the department, and thus feels a certain moral obligation to do something in order to generate such money in other ways.
