Title: »Am I crazy or is it the others?« On relating inner and outer catastrophe
Bion’s concept of catastrophic change and Winnicott’s descriptions of madness and breakdown indicate experiences of fear: generally, fear that, despite being resisted all one’s life, is nevertheless the prerequisite for change and psychic growth. Here, the author tries to understand this phenomenon in a case study in which the maintenance of timelessness as a defence against reality and the creation of inseparability were central to the analysis. An external catastrophe then reactivated an internal catastrophe, leaded to more difference, to surprise, and to the renunciation of timelessness. The text examines the relationship between internal and external catastrophic change and breakdown as well as the role of surprise.
