Title: The Body of the Mother in the Non-Binary Domain
Femininity and Gender Difference in Identity Politics and Psychoanalysis
In the field of sexuality, major changes are currently being brought about by identity politics movements, trans* phenomena, and queer theory, as well as through the increasing decoupling of sexuality and reproduction. Against this cultural background, the psychoanalytic theory of femininity and difference, which has largely denied the significance of motherhood and the female body, is being rethought. This paper shows how the reproductive functions of women have been – at least until now – the basis for an asymmetry in gender relations that is fundamental to the psychoanalytic theory of gender difference. This approach will show how manifestations of »masculinity« and »femininity« emerge against the background of the socially determined (re)production of the unconscious through the complex interplay of body, drive, object relations, and identifications with »gender«.
