Title: »A little house for our baby«
Reflections on surrogacy cases
The traditional way of conceiving a child – in the intimacy of a sexual relationship – has existed for more than 2000 years, whereas the method made possible by medical technological intervention is only four decades old. In the case of surrogate motherhood, the links between filiation and the biological and symbolic bonds of kinship are even more pronounced. It involves three or more people giving birth to a different bodily architecture that consists of different combinations and substitutions of cells, fluids, and organs. Motherhood in this context is twofold: it involves the body of the pregnant woman and the unconscious and manifest desire for a child in the intended mother. From a psychoanalytic point of view, the questions are many and varied, because we are faced with transformations rooted in the female body and in the unborn child. How will these affect the child, the parental imaginary, and the pregnant woman? Three clinical cases of surrogate motherhood are presented: one of a couple, one of an individual treatment, and one of an analysis of a female child.
