Title: Causes and Treatment of the Postpartum Depression of a Mother with her Baby using Psychoanalytic Parent-Infant Psychotherapy (PIP)
This paper describes the various causes of postpartum depression. According to the author, the optimal treatment for postpartum depression is the co-therapy of mother and child with the participation of the father within the framework of analytic parent-infant psychotherapy (PIP). The paper characterizes the method, the setting, the therapeutic attitude towards the depressed mothers, and the way in which the babies are talked to. A detailed example of a short-term therapy illustrates the clinical work and shows how the parents’ own early childhood experiences are actualized in the postpartum situation. In this case, interpretations of the mother's jealousy and the baby's fear of death during birth contribute significantly to the mother's ability to develop a positive relationship with her daughter and to stabilize herself psychologically.
