In French psychoanalytic writing, the term »concrete thinking« is rarely used in connection to thought disorders in schizophrenia, likely because »abstract thinking« is also considered characteristic of these pathologies. The term »concrete thinking« is close to Freud's concept of »organ speech«, which French authors take to be an indicator of the difficulty in moving beyond word-presentations in order to cathect thing-presentations and, finally, external reality. Other approaches to thought disorders in schizophrenia from French authors will also be described. The first of these is the »disorganization of thought«, which, on the level of the association of thoughts, is expressed as an attack on their connections. This disorganization is related to the death drive or to a particularity that Racamier calls »paradoxality«. Another concept is the »phobia of mental functioning«, which refers to a particular form of fear that is brought on by one's own psychic functioning, as though thought itself were perceived as sexualized such that it is extinguished in the moment of orgasm. Clinical vignettes accompany these different cases.
