The aporia of Nachträglichkeit is examined as a tension between progressive and regressive temporal structures. The aim of the study is the hypothesis that the regressive time vector of Nachträglichkeit can offer a heuristic and hermeneutic model for accessing the non-repressed unconscious, thus pointing beyond linear temporality and beyond the classical treatment model of repression. Freud’s repression paradigm prevented the investigation of a regressive temporal movement of Nachträglichkeit, since causality cannot operate retrogradely. The semantic vagueness of the concept of repression, which overlaps topical, dynamic, and temporal meanings, led to a historical category error: Freud also assigned the regressive temporal direction of Nachträglichkeit to repression, thereby obscuring its hermeneutic function. The author discusses the significance of the concept of dissociation, originally attributed to Janet, which Freud replaced with repression to establish the regressive vector of Nachträglichkeit and thus enable access to the non-repressed unconscious.
