After a description of the development of the fetus and the intrauterine formation of its sensory capabilities, the focus lies on the endogenous rhythms developed by the fetus and their interaction with those of their mother's organism. Following an overview of prematurity and an introduction to the key principles of Esther Bick's method of infant observation, the author explores the experiences of two extremely low birth weight twins whom she observed during their first postnatal weeks in the NICU. From a psychoanalytical perspective, a premature birth before the 29th week of pregnancy might be conceptualised as a breakdown and conceived as a nameless state. Finally, the paper addresses the question in what way early rhythms might be understood as precursors to the experience of time.
