This paper attempts to trace the development of the experience of time and space. The earliest experiences of time and space emerge from the demands placed on the mental system. In the deferred gratification, duration and extension must be processed whilst acknowledging an independent reality. They are experienced in the Cs as temporality and spatiality. Psychical experiences of space and time are likely to develop only in forms of succession and extension, but are unlikely to take on metric, chronological and Euclidean dimensions.
