Referring to physical and neurobiological concepts relating to the phenomenon of time, the author argues that a mental space-time emerges along the arrow of time in every human development. In it, the individually represented time domains of the past, present and potential future are connected to the triangular mental space formed by relationship representations by means of the modalities of diachronic and unconscious synchronous time. During the duration of a psychoanalytic process and the presence of the analytical relationship, imaginative, potentially transformative journeys through time to formative places, relationships and feelings of the analysand can take place, whereby the points in time visited are located »spatially« to the analysand's present. The doubling of the analyst as the representative of a new present relationship and as the representative of earlier, but not yet past, or imagined future relationships can, by means of a spiral process, enable the analysand to perceive themselves differently in the currently revived or retrospectively re-experienced relationships with the analyst.
