I want to thank the discussants for their thoughtful comments. There is one issue which I would like to address. I think that psychological dynamic and structural processes are currently reasonably well defined and biological processes are modestly but sufficiently delineated so that some cross-references and correlations between the two are possible. I believe that Dr. Nersessian has overstated the problems of linking analytic and neurophysiological observations. We need to formulate more psychological terminology and concepts to advance theoretical and clinical integration.
I appreciated the remarks of the discussants. I agree that one of the problems in thinking about my patients is that I am in the middle of these analyses. Also, there is so little data published on this situation that some of the questions are hard for me to answer at this point. Dr. Willick mentioned that I had a third patient in analysis who had been on medication, which actually raises a different point, and one that I didn't address in my presentation. In the middle of an ongoing analysis, another physician prescribed psychoactive medication which the analysand continued for some time and then finally discontinued. Tonight we have only discussed a situation in which we have recommended medication.
