Dr. Robert Kabcenell, a graduate of the Institute and a member of the Society since 1966, died on April 26, 1991, at the age of 60 as a result of injuries sustained during a robbery.
Dr. Kabcenell, a training and supervising analyst, had been an extremely active member of the Society and Institute. He had served as a Course Instructor, Society Secretary, member of the Board of Directors, and as a member or chair of several Society and Institute Committees, including the Educational Committee, Admissions Committee, and the Child Analysis Committee.
Dr. Kabcenell received his undergraduate degree in German Literature, a master's degree in neuroanatomy, and an M.D., all from the University of Michigan. After a tour of duty in the Air Force he spent a year studying with Anna Freud at the Hampstead Clinic; he then continued his psychiatric training as a resident at Albert Einstein. He was on the teaching faculty at Montefiore Hospital for many years.
Dr. Kabcenell was not only a highly regarded clinician and teacher but was also appreciated for his wide range of cultural interests; he was an avid amateur cellist. One of Dr. Kabcenell's special traits was manifested in his friendship and concern for the members of the generation of psychoanalysts who fled Europe before World War II. As they grew old and at times isolated, he remained an admiring colleague and nurturing companion of many, including Robert Bak, Annie Reich, and Lillian Malcove.
