Child and Adolescent Analysis: Its Significance for Clinical Work with Adults is an ambitious undertaking, a book about how child analysts think and what they do. Dowling's stated purpose is to present a topial approach: a group of psychoanalytic scholars explores and discusses one specific topic intensively. In this way the relevant basic psychoanalytic concepts and issues can be presented clearly and directly, enriched by illustrative clinical examples which allow the reader to evaluate the authors' conclusions. There are seven presenters—Abrams, Chused, Shane, Blos, Novick, Tyson, Jacobs—and four discussants—Brenner, Pacella, McLaughlin, MacLeod. The presenters' replies to the discussants' questions comprise an innovative final section.
