On August 23, 1988 Hans told me the following dream: “I came to a session. You sat in the chair behind the sofa. I saw a manuscript lying on a small table. I asked you what it was about and you told me that it was something you had written about me.” I was surprised. Two weeks earlier I had given a presentation in Copenhagen, where I used material from the analysis with Hans. How was this possible? Could this be an example of unconscious interaction and a confirmation of the space which can be created between the analytic partners? This had been a part of my presentation in Copenhagen (Hallgrímsson, 1988).
A week later he dreamt that he held a color photo in his hand with a picture on both sides. On the one side there was a picture from a congress, a seminar or something of the kind, where he recognized me. On the other side there was a picture of himself. This reminded him of the first dream, where he had dreamt that I had written something about him. I had to let this sink in and digest in order to find out if it would be right to tell him that his dream corresponded to reality.
It had now become clear to me that this was an unconscious interaction. I felt it was right that I bring forward my part in our joint picture. Put together it became a whole picture, like a symbol which has two parts that together form a whole. His picture was a dream, mine a reality—two sides of the same coin. I told him that the reality
