There is a rich and controversial history which informs our thinking about female psychology, but about which our students have been insufficiently informed. These controversies, even now, are not fully resolved. Freud (1925) long ago made a distinction between male and female sexual development, but to this day we understand male development better than female. In recent years, an increasing number of challenging new ideas have emerged (or reemerged) about female development which should be addressed and integrated with the older classical views of female psychology. Our students would benefit from a more informed perspective in order to be better able to listen for and evaluate their clinical data in terms of gender issues.
