We are celebrating the 85th Anniversary of the New York Psychoanalytic Society and the 65th Anniversary of the New York Psychoanalytic Institute, commemorating ourselves as both the oldest analytic organization and the oldest psychoanalytic training center in the United States.

Our symposium is entitled, “Technique and the Psychoanalytic Relationship: Contemporary Views from a Classical Perspective.” We have set our panel members the task of exploring the development over time of their own conceptualization of the analytic relationship and the manifestation of such understanding in their technique.

This program provides an opportunity for us to reflect on a topic of current controversy, the analytic relationship, and to lend to it our
