When you were analyzing this patient, were you a candidate? In supervision? Had you graduated?
I was an advanced candidate when I started. This was my fourth analytic case. I was in supervision for the first few months of the treatment and thereafter only very intermittently, because this was my “unsupervised case.” I would go back for supervision from time to time, e.g., during some of the termination threats. At such times I would talk to the same supervisor about the case—but it was mostly unsupervised.
The fee, by the way, was considerably lower than the previous psychotherapy fee. When I raised it, I raised it by five dollars, so it was not a major thing in practical terms but the symbolic significance obviously was enormous. This episode occurred shortly after my graduation.
