Changes in the theoretical, scientific, and financial aspects of the practice of psychiatry have created an environment that is confusing for the new psychiatry graduate considering psychoanalytic training. Though not true historically, psychoanalytic and psychiatric diagnostic thinking, and therefore treatment approach, have diverged increasingly in the past decade. The use of standard psychiatric nosology and psychopharmacology, as well as consideration of the genetic basis of psychological illness, are compatible with psychoanalytic treatment, and should become part of the
psychoanalytic training curriculum. Case material is presented to illustrate this thesis.
