A fugue for Naomi and Doris
Attention will be paid to modes of discourse in the psychoanalytic clinical situation. Pauses, changes in voice, key, affective tone, tempo, pitch, and prosody—and especially changes in modes of discourse—will be noted. These changes are called junctures. The influence of unconscious organizing fantasy process on unconscious conflict experienced just before the juncture will be demonstrated.
Junctures, framings, figures of speech, mise en abyme, and metanarrative elements are tools of discovery. Sometimes the analyst has to perform meanings by way of recognition scenes and get better before the analysand gets better. Meanings are performed in the work, play, love, and hate space and there will be special attention paid to how the analysand listens.
