Play is portrayed as a gradual unfolding capability that emerges fully as a child grows up. After describing the sequential steps of the emergence of normal play, the author presents two extended analytic vignettes to illustrate how intrapsychic conflict can alter the display of normal play. In addition, one vignette illustrates how a child can use the phenomenon of transference as an elaborate form of play.
