Our beloved friend and colleague, Lester Schwartz, died on June 18th, 2000, after a brief illness caused by an unsuspected lung cancer. He was 72 years old. He was born and raised in the Bronx and was the eldest of two brothers. Lester received his B.A. and M.D. from New York University. He interned at Jewish Hospital in Brooklyn. He started his psychiatric residency in Cincinnati and completed it at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx in 1956. Subsequently he became an Assistant Professor and Clinical Director of the Department of Psychiatry at Albert Einstein. He was appointed acting chief of the Department of Psychiatry at Montefiore Hospital in 1965.
After graduation in 1966 from the New York Psychoanalytic Institute, he devoted himself to teaching and participating in Institute and Society life. In 1978 he became a member of Group 9 at the Center for Advanced Psychoanalytic Studies at Princeton, NJ. Lester was appointed a Training and Supervising Analyst of the New York Psychoanalytic Institute in 1983. He was appointed to the Committee on Institutes of the American Psychoanalytic Association in 1984 and served on that committee until 1990. For many years he served as an influential member of the Admissions, Progression, and Educational Committees of the New York Psychoanalytic Institute. From 1988 to 1992 he was Chairman of the Curriculum Committee, and from 1997 to 1999 he was President of our Society.
