This paper focuses on the issue of working through in the analyst. Utilizing an extended clinical example, the author illustrates the role that engagement and working through of old conflicts in the analyst play in the treatment situation. The idea is presented that in many cases of impasse and stalemate, progress in treatment depends not only on recognition of the analyst's countertransferences, but on the continued working through of them by means of sustained self-analytic efforts.
