One of the Oxford English Dictionary's definitions of “moment” is: “the momentary conjunction of circumstances that affords an opportunity.” This paper describes an analytic moment as one in which the analyst and the analysand have participated in important exchanges which brought about the opportunity for significant insights, discoveries, or changes. The analyst, impressed by the emotional power of the moment and by the comments and responses of the patient, considers it a critical event in the progress of their work and uses it as a point of reference for their future efforts. During an analytic moment the patient and the analyst converge, after much work, into an organized instance of experience in which the patient is able to recognize him-or herself in the presence of the analyst.
