In many large psychoanalytic centers in this country there can often be found an analyst who is consulted by other analysts when problems arise in their work, particularly in training analyses or in analyses of those in the psychoanalytic community. Some time ago in New York City this was Dr. Phyllis Greenacre, who was generally regarded as possessing special gifts in her understanding, intuition, and concern with the early period of development. When an impasse occurred in an analysis and an issue of early development or trauma was felt to be involved, Dr. Greenacre was called in as a consultant and/or referred the patient. She was likewise consulted when even more serious trouble occurred in an analysis requiring the delicate work for which she was known.
Dr. Milton Horowitz for some time now has been such a resource in the New York area. When there is trouble in an analysis, an impasse in an ongoing analysis, or persisting discomfort in a previously analyzed patient, Dr. Horowitz is called in to assess the problem and recommend a solution, whether continuation or change of analysts in an ongoing situation, or reanalysis in a postanalytic situation. His sensitivity and tact in regard to particular mismatches of patient and analyst is remarkable and much appreciated by the community.…
Referrals for reanalysis occur most frequently when the outcome of the prior analytic work, although seemingly satisfactory and successful in many regards, has not resulted in the patient feeling ultimately that he was living a better life.… Often, as Dr. Horowitz describes it, there has been a problem in making an object tie with someone with whom one shares a life, a life of living together twenty-four hours a day and not one hour a day.… For, not only is there pain but an essential loneliness in an object choice that is dictated by neurosis, by punishment, and by the requirement of unhappiness.… One should, rather, be able to love and be loved by the person one is with day in and day
