How exciting that video is entering child psychotherapists’ field of communication! This was my first thought when asked to review these three videos.
I was immediately faced with the question of how to view them: as an ordinary member of a television audience, as an interested student of the subject matter with pen and paper at hand or as a reviewer with my remote control at the ready to replay passages at will? I tried to keep all of these in mind.
The three videos explore different day care settings and their effects upon the young children attending them. Two of the films look at particular centres and one is a comparative study of different styles of day care.
I shall look at the general study first.
This film is presented like an illustrated lecture, with headings written out on the screen. Five different sorts of day care are considered, with particular focus on individual children in some cases. The settings covered are a private day nursery, a family centre (Buddle Lane), a child minder at home, a nursery school (the Anna Freud Nursery), and a playgroup. The main headings are enlightening in themselves as to what is important in Day Care. They are:
Facilitating secure attachments and dealing with separation in a day care setting.
Managing transitions in day care.
Appropriate working practices in day care.
Assessment, observation and discussion.
Joint work with parents.
