This issue is the first for which a theme was set in advance - work with children with an illness or disability. The response to the call for papers was impressive, revealing how much of this work is being done, and also showing how the setting of a theme prompts people to write and to submit papers that otherwise might not have seen the light of day.
As a result, this journal covers a wide range of work in different settings. It shows how psychotherapists have been learning to adapt their technique and experience to work both with this population of damaged children and with their carers, often without the traditional trappings of psychotherapy.
New ways of working are explored in some of the papers, while in others the setting and method is familiar but the nature of the work and the understanding needed is deeply affected by the special problems facing the patient.
Future issues may again concentrate on a chosen theme. The editorial board would welcome both feedback on this style of journal and suggestions for possible future topics.
