This welcome book comprises a comprehensive collection of papers on adolescent development, with a clear diagnostic focus and implications for treatment running as a thread throughout. The title is particularly apt. We are taken on an illuminating journey of the processes of adolescent development, aided by our expanding psychoanalytic understanding of this phase. The choices of classical and contemporary papers make interesting reading. It was fascinating to re-visit ‘old’ papers, and useful to have major contributions on adolescent pathology and normality compiled under one umbrella. The thought-provoking contemporary choices have not thrown the baby out with the bath water. The adolescent processes are considered from structural, dynamic and topographical perspectives.
The first and last papers are by Perret-Catipovic and by Perret-Catipovic and Ladame themselves. They provide fascinating reading, historically, developmentally and diagnostically, and draw a consolidating framework around the book. Despite different authors and writing styles, there is a strong coherence to the collection.
