I am grateful to my colleague, Angela Kaur Bagum, for drawing my attention to the fact that I had misrepresented the situation when I described South Asians as having been ‘invited’ to Kenya in the late 19th Century. It is, in fact, well documented that after the abolition of slavery, the colonising British controlled labour through ‘indentured labour’ but that in practice, this was still slavery in many regards (Tinker, Hugh. A New System of Slavery: The Export of Indian Labour Overseas, 1830-1920. 2d ed. London: Hansib, ). In not taking a sufficiently critical view of the history curriculum I grew up with, I have perpetuated the Eurocentric whitewashing of history with all the harm that enacts. I am sorry for the harm this has caused and grateful to Angela for getting in touch and for doing so with such generosity, enabling a helpful dialogue between us.
