The topic of psychological interventions via telephone and internet (also termed teletherapy, videotherapy) was last investigated within the Research Digest in April 2020 at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Within this Research Digest, the papers presented included published research, looking into: internet-based psychodynamic psychotherapy for adolescents experiencing depression (Lindqvist et al., 2020), experiences of Singaporean primary school children accessing counselling via a live chat portal (Kit et al., 2019), a group videoconferencing intervention for parents of children with a life-threatening illness (Rayner et al., 2016), and clinicians’ experiences of using remote technology to deliver therapy (Cipolletta & Mocellin, 2018; Trub & Magaldi, 2017). Articles were also presented which looked at developing and or training clinicians to offer remote therapeutic interventions for people living in rural areas, with little access to therapeutic services (Duncan et al. 2014; McCord et al. 2015). The Research Digest also included papers which covered theoretical ideas and observations on offering psychoanalysis via videoconference (Gutiérrez, 2017), reviews of the literature (Perle & Nierenberg, 2013), and a review of studies comparing telephone and face-to-face therapy (Irvine et al., 2020).
Since then, a vast number of papers looking at the impact of online working have been published within the JCP, the majority of which have focused on the impact of moving from face to face/in person therapeutic interactions to online/remote settings from a psychoanalytic perspective. Many of these papers were published in the special edition of the JCP, ‘Child psychotherapy in the time of Covid: voices from around the world on working through a pandemic’, issued in December 2020 (Holloway et al. 2020; Zuppardi, 2020; Carpi Lapi et al. 2020; Zaharia & Anagnostaki, 2020; Hutchison, 2020; Paiva, 2020; Neven, 2020; Shulman, 2020; Hart, 2020; Cohen, 2020; Sloan Donachy, 2020; Ac
