Our clinical material illustrates how disturbances in self-development become manifest in the clinical work. Bearing in mind our questions about the fragmentation of the self and the disorders of the self, our panelists (Anne Alvarez, Sheldon Bach, Peter Fonagy, Gyuri Gergely, Linda Mayes, Arietta Slade, and Mary Target) demonstrate how deeply one's theory influences the perception of this very poignant clinical material. This chapter shows how their theoretical discussions regarding the evolution and dissolution of the self illuminate and inform the treatment situation.
