The development of the self is probably best illustrated through observation of young children as they reveal their inner selves in the therapeutic process. The following case is a study of a young child in a long-term treatment with a thoughtful and sensitive analyst, Laura Kleinerman. The case of Sam is discussed by Anne Alvarez, a noted child psychotherapist at the Tavistock clinic in London. Dr. Alvarez has worked for many years with children whose self-development is compromised by their severe pathology. She has a unique Kleinian perspective and a great deal of experience working with children who have no reparable objects—who “live in a world of … hate and rage where survival and not love is at issue.”
